Penticton thinking about Prison?

As an active blogger and twitterer…..I have found a blog that I really enjoy reading!

As it turns out there is a city councilor who embraces social media and has been doing a great job asking for the publics’ opinion and sharing the issues that the city is dealing with. This last one is whether or not the Pentictonites would appreciate the economic rewards of a prison within the city limits. I have been following the feedback which seems fairly supportive. I think Dan wrote “5 for 1 against ratio so far.” The only drawback to this is that the possible location suggestions have not been released. They want support before they drop the location, location, location bomb.

At first my gut reaction was “YUCK” a prison. That would taint his quaint resort, retirement community.

As a RREALTOR® who also specializes n relocation across Canada I attend almost every real estate conference in Canada and representing the Okanagan everyone just lights up when they hear my service area. OOO I want to retire there, my grandparents live there, my parents have a condo there, I went there every summer as  a child, my kid goes to the hockey school. The channel is my favorite, I have played golf there, it is beautiful. WINE country!! I don’t want to hear…..”Oh yeah. the small town with a prison”. Is that my ego talking????

Let’s look at the positives  Employment, an economic boost that Penticton residnts could benefit from.

Please leave your feedback , I am interested to hear what you think!!! Especially if you are one of the people who always thought or know that you will end up in the Okanagan. Would a prison taint that??? or is Penticton that special piece of paradise ….??

I moved to Penticton from Western Massachusetts five years ago, and as picturesque as New England can be, I was gobsmacked by the natural beauty of the South Okanagan.

It would be a shame to tarnish such a treasure.

Let’s look at the negatives, recidivism. In B.C. Provincial Prisons there is one repeat offender for every1.6 first timers. In other words 39% of the inmate population will reoffend.

Some in our society have no interest in leading a crime free lifestyle.Once released from prison where do you think the 39% who reoffend will go to commit their further crimes?

  3. Hi folks,
The ~3500 names on the NO prison petition was turned in on Tuesday, May 24th. We had about 100 folks on hand and mayor Ashton was “peppered” with questions (some are the same old questions that were never answered, some were new and very well articulated).
